Alan McCorkindale Marlborough Riesling 2002 Solid lime and grapefruit flavours give vibrant acidity. Some chalky characters on the palate too. A dry, spicy, spritzy wine with lots of apple and citrus flavours lingering. 19Aug2002.

Alana Martinborough Riesling 2002 Delicately scented with spring flowers and lemon. Sweetish in the mouth with talc, ripe citrus, flowers and passionfruit. It's quite subtle yet juicy, clean and balanced. Will develop well. 11.5% alc. 18gms rs. 16Oct2002.

Allan Scott Marlborough Riesling 2002 On the nose, lime aromas join floral talc-like fragrances. Lots of citrus blossom and juicy citrus flavours. Delicate at first but has a power-house finish. Lovely wine with terrific balance and flavour and good palate weight all the way through. 7.4g rs. 9Sep2002.
Limes and talculm powder. Dry but balanced. Apples. Lemons. Limes. Zesty spice. Very pure riesling notes. Great length. $18. 2Oct2002.
A spicy zesty Riesling with lemon sherbet, mandarin and freshly picked apricot flavours. Just on the cusp of off-dry, it's sweetly musky and the 7.4 grams of residual sugar is balanced well to the lively acidity. As the wine lingers it develops a honeyed complexity. Serve chilled for a refreshing summery drink. Gold medal winner at the 2002 Liquorland International Top 100. $17.95 15Jan2003.

Ascension Marlborough Riesling 2002 Refreshingly off-dry with citrus, tropical fruits and ginger spices. $19.95. 11May2003.

Burnt Spur Martinborough Riesling 2002 Pale coloured with honeysuckle floral aromas. A very delicate clean, pure and beautifully balanced riesling with citrus and subtle earthy characters. A refreshing 'stone sucking' riesling that would be a great seafood wine. 12.5% alcohol. 2gms rs.
Note - I get 'stone sucking' characters sometimes in very clean dry rieslings like this one. 16Oct2002.
Brightly acidic nose. Dry and limey with a slightly kero character, full-bodied, like an Aussie only better. Lots of charm with a touch of honey on the finish. *****. 8Dec2003.

Canterbury House Waipara Riesling 2002 (synthetic cork) Soft and medium with a fruit juice texture, lots of white honey, citrus blossom, mandarin and tropical fruit that lingers deliciously on the finish. It's a terrifically balanced medium style with a big powerful, full-bodied flavour. 13.5% alc. 10Sep2003.
Pale lemon. Sweet fruity aromas and lively juicy, fruity flavours, it's full of ripe tropical and citrus fruit with passionfruit, pineapple, mandarin and lime. Made in a medium style with terrific balance of fruit sweetness to the acidity, it's very, very approachable and will appeal to all riesling drinkers at any time of day. 15Oct2003.

Carrick Central Otago Riesling 2002 Amazingly strong grapefruit aromas. Rich limey, citrus flavours. A lovely vibrant and fresh riesling even though there is 12 grams of residual sugar. Terrific balance to the searing Central Otago acidity. Drinking well now, that grapefruit flavour comes out and lingers on the finish - imagine freshly squeezed juice with a hint of honey and a touch of ginger to give complexity. 12.5% alc. 9Sep2002.
Pale Lemon. Floral, talcy, limey aromas. Ripe, grapefruit, lots of acidity, well-balanced, tasty. Riesling the way I like it. Lemons, limes, apples, honey, lychees and a lovely 'sucking on a river worn greywacke pebble' finish. Terrific pure unadulterated Riesling flavours with a grainy, talcy, limey finish. $19.95. 5Mar2003.
Masses of citrus and melon fruit on the nose makes this smell quite juicy and tempting. Lots of citrus in the flavour - limes, mandarins, grapefruit - plus citrus oil and zest, it's dry, steely and astringent, a little powdery and pithy but with terrific mouth-filling length. 12.5% alc. $19.95. 27Aug2003.
Nicely fruited palate with tropical fruit and stonefruit softening the acids and a nicely balanced citrussy, slightly earthy finish with lingering citrus flavours. 14g/L rs. 12.5% alc. 20Sep2004.

Chard Farm Central Otago Riesling 2002 Quite lifted and spicy, just starting to show some fusel notes, warm texture, good mouthfeel, zesty lime and earthy notes, crisp finish with apple flavours lingering on the aftertaste. Off dry. 12.5% alc. 5Oct2004.

Charles Wiffen Marlborough Riesling 2002 Guava and loquat aromas with a touch of musk. This is juicy and spicy with lots of limey citrus and the fleshiness and bright flavour of feijoa. Zesty finish tending toward marmalade in its richness. I can fee this is going to develop some lovely honeyed richness. 12.5%. 27Sep2002.

Clifford Bay Riesling 2002 - Marlborough Served chilled, this refreshing wine has a full rich nose of toasty limes that promises much. It's reasonably dry, crisp and spicy with tons of lemon and apple acidity, a hint of earthiness and a ripe fruit finish that tends towards tropical fruit. For a Riesling it's quite fat in the palate and the honeyed citrus flavours linger well. $18.95. 19Mar2003.

Coney Ragtime Riesling 2002 Very ripe. Full of citrus with hints of peel and a luscious honeyed finish. Good citrus intensity lingers with a ripe orange marmalade richness. Great length. 9gms rs. 2% botrytis. $17-$19. 16Oct2002.

Corbans Private Bin Amberley Riesling 2002 A ripe, juicy style with mandarin rather than lemon on the lovely citrus backbone and just a touch of honey. There's a little development with some toastiness creeping in, softer acids and riper tropical fruit with honeysuckle and apples lingering beautifully on the finish. With its off dry flavours this will have universal appeal. 11.5% alc. $19.95. 9Feb2005.

Craggy Range Rapaura Riesling 2002 - Marlborough. Fresh and fruity, lots of juicy acidity, apples, a touch of pear. Nice grainy textured wine with a full bodied Riesling richness and lingering lemon flavours. I can see this developing a honeyed concentration with time. Nice wine. $21.95. 8Jan2003.
Watery colour. Quite closed on the nose, some faintly floral aromas perhaps. Quite strong in flavour with first-up acid drop and mandarin flavours developing into full rich juicy lime and lemon. It's quite tight, fairly tart and just a little astringent and there's a cheesy (Brie) and slightly sulphury character on the finish. 13.5% alc. $21.95. 30Apr2003.

Crossroads Destination Series Hawkes Bay Riesling 2002 smells of citrus and yeast and tastes limey and earthy with a rich honey and grapefruit finish. $19.95. 15Mar2003.

Dry River Craighall Riesling 2002 At first it smells dry and citrussy with nutty, yeasty, lemon pip, lemon juice, freshly squeezed aromas and in the mouth the strong earthy lemon flavours are joined by limes. It is very tight and perhaps a little austere right now but honey emerges and the citrus is sweet and powerful on the finish. With its dry acidity, this is a very fresh, steely wine that has all the hallmarks of turning from an ugly duckling into a swan with careful cellaring and its long term future looks excellent. A must for Riesling aficionados. $32 on mail order. 16Feb2003.

Esk Valley HB Riesling 2002 Another deliciously floral limey riesling with an excellent chalky-like texture. 11% alc. 20Aug2002.

Felton Road Riesling 2002 - Bannockburn, Otago. Floral and citrus scented medium style with lots of zizz in the mouth that attacks like sherbet with a limey pizzazz. It loses the zizz to become quite creamy textured with flavours of lemons, spice and honey with an earthy complexity. A 'serious wine' with terrific length and a concentrated long lingering finish. Very, very good. $25.95. 8Jan2003.

Felton Road Block One Riesling 2002 - Bannockburn, Central Otago. This pale coloured, oily viscous looking wine has been served quite cold and at first the nose is quite closed. But as it warms up there is a vague notion of strawberry then later lots of citrus. Lemon and limes and a medley of fruit salad ingredients join the nutty apple flavours of this seamless, silky textured and beautifully balanced wine. A pure lemon flavour lingers on the fabulous length. Just 10% alcohol by volume. $30.95. 15Jan2003.

Fiddler's Green Waipara Riesling 2002 Pale straw. Lemon and lime peel aromas with a hint of musky loquat blossom. Quite shy. Ripe and zesty in the palate becoming full and rich. Lots of citrus and a sweetish floral finish. Starts off delicately but finishes strong. Some residual apparent (in fact it has 14 grams/litre r.s). The leftovers develop some honey, luscious pineapple and tropical fruits with a squeeze of orange and lemon, while retaining those floral aromas. Very good. 22Apr2003.
Pale straw. It's a little sweeter, riper and with more viscosity in the texture than the previous wine (an Aussie rielsing) with spice, ginger, limes, mandarins, juicy fresh orange and a squeeze of honey on the finish. Good balance and length. Lingering citrus. A lovely wine for drinking now with excellent medium term cellaring potential. 12.5% alc. $20.95. 21May2003. ****
This smells ripe and fruity with lemon zest, orange, mandarin, spice, honey and jasmine, honeysuckle and orange blossom flower, it's ripe and juicy with a not overly-sweet finish and lots of fruit hanging around in the mouth for ages afterwards. 12.5% $19.95. 27Aug2003.

Forrest Estate Dry Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Showing its age with a straw gold colour, slightly kero aromas and rich, toasty flavours yet it still has vibrant acidity. It's dry and spicy with mellow tropical fruit, an earthy (talc-like) backbone, well-balanced alcohol and a long, dry, spicy, lightly floral, lemony finish. Drinking beautifully now. 12.8% alc. 6.5g/l rs. $18.95. 7Dec2005.
Juicy lime and tropical fruit aromas with a hint of freshly cut pineapple and a smattering of spice. Dry to the taste with an oily, aloe vera-like note, beautiful fruit focus and a toastiness to the long, lemony finish. 13% alc. 6.5g/l rs. $18.95. 25Jan2006.
Light yellow gold with a glint of green. Toasty lime (kero) on the nose with a lovely floral overtone and juicy Riesling fruit in the palate. Its fattening up since last tasted, with peach nectar joining the apples and limes and there's a bottle-aged toastiness to finish. 13% alc. $17.95.29Mar2006.
Light yellow gold in colour, with four years of age this has developed lovely toasty aromas but still tastes youthful with crisp, fresh, zingy acidity, citrus and tropical fruit and a rich, full finish with a remarkably long aftertaste. This is world class Riesling made in New Zealand, with multiple gold medals to its name. 13% alc. 6.5g/l rs. $16.95. 12Jul2006.

Framingham Classic Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) There are lemons, limes and just a touch of honey on the nose of this pale gold wine that has an aroma that reminds me of home-made hokey-pokey and reminds someone else of a baby's bottom that has been rubbed with petroleum jelly. There's lots of spicy juicy citrus in the palate - limes, lemons and mandarins galore. It seems off dry at first but finishes quite dry, there's just so much acidity. It is, perhaps, a little astringent. It would make a terrific match to pan-fried white fish fillets. 11% alc. $19.95. 2Jul2003.
Pale gold, a little deeper than te others. Delicate limey citrus, as it warms up it is so delicately honeyed. Heaps of lime flavours, Classic dry style that will develop some kero traits with time. Wouldn't like this in a blind tasting as I would pick Aussie rather than New Zealand. Underlying juiciness. Very good wine. Yum. Rich and intense. You know you have a riesling when you have this in your glass. A core of earthy citrus up front fills out in the palate with ripe fleshy fruits and a dry zestiness on the finish. Full of flavour with sweetness coming thru on finish. Terrific length. Off dry in sweetness. 11% alc. 18.5/20. Chilled Wine Tasting - 6Dec2003.

Framingham Dry Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Light yellow gold coloured with aromas of toasty lime, it smells like a dry Riesling and it is. It's full of Roses lime juice, green apple and floral talc characters with a rich mid-palate and a spicy, zesty finish with a touch of natural honey sweetness that has come from the bottle development. 12% alc. $24.95. 26Apr2006.

Fromm Marlborough La Strada 'Auslese' Riesling 2002 Very Germanic (Mosel-like) on the nose but has some of that coconut lime intensity in the scent. To me it tastes better than German, after all I am a parochial Kiwi taster. There's distinct lime oil, hand cream complexity with clean fruit, citrus, pears and honeysuckle nectar and that oily, yet stony mouth drying feel. Very long and pure, a wine to drink all night. 7.5% alc. 85gms rs, 8 gms TA, 2.5pH. 26Aug2003.
I asked Hatsch Kalberer why this wine is labelled 'Auslese'. It is because the wine is under 9% alcohol therefore cannot be exported to any EU countries.

Fromm Marlborough La Strada Riesling 2002 A wonderful floral scented wine with wonderful mouth-filling, ripe citrus and peach-like fruits, it's very ripe with fine acidity balancing the ripeness and a touch of honey on the cool finish that has a dry mouth feel that sucking a river stone gives . It's mouth-filling and very very long in flavour with a honey lemon and lime marmalade finish. 9% alc. 70gms rs. 8gms TA and pH 2.8. Made in a 'spatlese' style. 26Aug2003.

Gladstone Wairarapa Riesling 2002 Subtle lemon pith characters on the nose, it's a salty, tangy, steely wine, very dry and slightly powdery with apples and pear and lots of natural, earthy, citrus acidity like that of freshly squeezed lemon. A well balanced wine that's zesty, crisp and refreshing with limes and a floral nuance on the lengthy finish. Expect honey to develop with time. Dry Riesling lovers will enjoy this wine. 7Nov2003.

Grove Mill Marlborough Riesling 2002 Nice whiff of citrus on the nose. Lots of delicious ripe, juicy citrus fruit with a hint of spice and musk and a sweet toasty finish. Typical Grove Mill style with terrific balance to the 17 grams of residual sugar, as would be expected. 9Sep2002.
This is a lovely pure clean riesling with rich limey and citrus peel scents and upfront lemon and honeysuckle flavours. There is, however, a range of flavours and while citrus descriptors abound a hint of strawberry comes forth. The wine was extremely tight at first but opened up well in the glass with sweeter, ripe flavours, gw-like characters of musk, lychee, orange juice and candied peel emerging. Jackson Estate Dry Marlborough Riesling 2002 Lovely development with floral talc and lime aromas and just a hint of kero, this full-bodied Riesling has a wonderfully rich structure and a long, crisp finish. 13.3% alc. 3g/l rs. $17. 8Sep2005.

Kim Crawford Dry Riesling 2002 This is drinking really well now. There's grapefruit oil, musk, beeswax, honey and spice and loads of lemon and lime. An unctuous wine with great length. 24Jul2003.

Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Riesling 2002 Pale straw. Limes, earthy, a little cheesy and a little oily. Grapefruit peel joins the scents. Seem a little older than a 2002 (than the other 2002's tasted at the same time) and is picking up some extracted fruit kero/oily characters. Melons, lemon and riper fruits with strong oily flavours on the finish. 22Apr2003.

Linden Estate Hawkes Bay Dry Riesling 2002 Very dry with lots of 'rotten citrus' fruit character on the nose that I don't particularly like. This smells to me like overripe citrus that I have left in the fruit bowl too long. Nick Chan says it hasn't settled after the bottling process. It is a little disintegrated at this stage and shows sweeter, more appealing fruit on the finish. 4g rs. 9Sep2002.

Main Divide Canterbury Riesling 2002 Lemons, limes, apples and orange marmalade characterise this ripe, sweetish, juicy, slightly viscous Riesling that is fringing on the cusp of Gewurztraminer in flavour. It will continue to improve for 2-3 years and can be cellared for much much longer. 11% alc. 3Sep2003.

Mahurangi Selection Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Made from fruit grown in the Awatere Valley, this is dry and citrussy with good fruit weight and concentration. The best wine in the Mahurangi Estate range and a good combo with an open chicken sandwich. 11.5%. 10May2003.
From the same bottle, 3 days later. Has developed well in the bottle. Strong limey citrus and floral aromas carry through to the palate. Good sherbet acidity with honeyed notes starting to creep in. Excellent length. A wine with the ability to flourish as the acidity integrates further into the flower. 13May2003.

Margrain Martinborough Riesling 2002 (synthetic) Dry smelling with faint citrus on the nose, a burst of citrus and spice in the palate, there's a sour component - grapefruit skin perhaps - and a zingy finish. 13Oct2003.
"Off dry style" Some spritz A little herbal. Some B.O. Good body, earthy, a little grainy, good body but not earth shattering. Lemons, limes, flowers, earth, violets, grapefruit and a riper fruit finish. .Has a rotten fruit character and hints of kero. Sharp and hard when chilled, better when warmed up a little in the glass. 13%. 16/20. Chilled Wine Tasting - 6Dec2003.
Bright, limey, a little mellow, lots of lemon, a bit gluggy (thick) on the finish. Heaps of flavour though. ***1/2. 8Dec2003.

Martinborough Vineyard 'Jackson Block' Riesling 2002 Pretty closed on the nose with just the faint scent of flowers but full of ripe and spicy fruit in the mouth however, with citrus, apples and a hint of honey. This is a lovely, juicy and approachable style with a spicy, lingering finish that is terrifically floral in nature with lots of lively citrus zest. 12.5% alc. 7.5g rs. 9Sep2002.
Quite closed. Dry, limey, rich, grainy, good body, earthy, full-flavoured, well balanced. Citrus, has a touch of sweetness. Honeyed finish. Will develop some kero with time. Delicate at first but good persistence. Earthy grainy, a little bready. 12.5% alc. 7gL rs. 8gL acid. 18/20. Chilled Wine Tasting - 6Dec2003.

Melness North Canterbury Riesling 2002 Straw lemon in colour with flinty, stony, honey, orange juice and floral aromas, this fresh spritzy and vibrantly fruity terrifically balanced Riesling, with its sweet musky flavours of honeydew melon and all sorts of citrus, just flows. It is delicious and mouthwatering. There's a hint of botrytis too. My white wine of the night. $21.95. 19Feb2003.
Richly perfumed and pungent with floral, spicy, musky aromas this is medium sweet in flavour with an array of juicy citrus that comes in layers of oranges, grapefruits, mandarins and limes with a smattering of ginger, musk and honeysuckle nectar. Almost unctuous in its texture. Quite primary in its fruit and almost impossible not to like. I rate it fantastic. 12.5% alc. $21.95 25Jun2003.
Pale yellow, bright and spritzy, the wonderfully scented aroma of citrus blossom, honeysuckle, all sorts of citrus juices, ginger and marmalade lead into the sweetish palate where the flavours promised on the nose deliver. There's a touch of botrytis too that adds a honeyed richness to this beautifully balanced wine that has a nectar-like texture and terrific length. 12.5% alc. 8Oct2003.

Millton Opou Gisborne Riesling 2002 Lemons and limes on the nose of this oily, off-dry style. It's fat and soft with honey and apples that are just starting to take on a buttery flavour - just as they when you do when you cook them in butter. Citrus pip, a touch of peel, some florals then a long, slightly spicy, seemingly dry, honeyed finish with terrific length. This is 'iconic' Riesling and certainly a benchmark for Gisborne. People who know their herbs well may find the scent of hyssop, a blue-flowered companion herb that grows amongst the vines on the Opou vineyard. 10.5% alc. 1Oct2003.

Montana Reserve Marlborough Riesling 2002 Alluringly aromatic with limes, white flowers, talc and honeysuckle on the nose and terrific weight in the palate with apples, citrus and a zestiness to the flinty finish - an excellent example of New Zealand dry Riesling. 13% alc. $21.95. 14Sep2005.

Morworth Canterbury Riesling 2002 This bright and breezy riesling with fresh apple, lemon peel and blossomy scents, is just off dry to the taste with good palate weight, good texture and excellent length. It has substance to the spritely citrus and apple flavours with just a hint of pineapple, and tropical fruit sweetness on the finish. Drinking beautifully now. 10.6% alc. $18.50. 12Jun2004.

Mt Difficulty Dry Riesling 2002 Lemons! Grapefruit! A bucket of citrus on those. Lots of fruit, spicy zest, citrus oil and a touch of lime in the palate, it's pretty dry with a stone-sucking almost puckery finish. 14Aug2003.

Mt Difficulty Target Gully Single Vineyard Riesling 2002 - Bannockburn, CO Extremely floral on the nose this seems a little sweet and with 20 grams per litre of residual sugar it is no wonder.  But there's lots of acidity too and there is no way I would have though it this sweet - the sugar balances the acidity well.  It is creamy textured in the mouth with the steely acidity terrifically balanced to the myriad of fruit flavours that cover the apple, citrus, pear, passionfruit and banana spectrum.   Very refreshing and moreish. $21.95. 26Feb2003.
A little sweet after the searingly dry MtD Riesling, this has such lovely mouthfeel. It's floral on the nose with limes, tangelo, tropical fruit and fizzy fruit sherbet lollies in the palate on a juicy, almost nectar-like texture. A style that almost everyone will enjoy. 14Aug2003.

Muddy Water James Hardwick Riesling 2002 Pale coloured. Slightly oxidised apple aromas. Spritzy, sugar water, diluted and bland. Short finish with hints of honey and apple. 10Oct2002.

Muddy Water 'Unplugged' Riesling 2002 (sc) Floral and citrus aromas with a hint of earthiness. Sweet but well-balanced with delicate lemon and fruity flavours. Needs to be served slightly chilled to avoid cloying. 3.5/5. 10Oct2002.

Murdoch James Martinborough Riesling 2002 Spritzy riesling with spicy zest, earthy notes, apples, ripe lemon. This is a lovely refreshing summery style. Lingers well. 13% 8.5gms rs. 16Oct2002.
Pale straw. Talc, marshmallow nose with a lemon, floral, loquat blossom and ginger spice scent. Lacks a little in the palate after the terrific promise of the nose and I sense the fruit being squeezed. It is just a little hard on the finish. 22Apr2003.

Nga Waka Dry Martinborough Riesling 2002 Bone dry with rich zesty fruit and talc coming cutting through the floral, lime blossom aromas and a beautifully weighted palate with a long, dry citrussy finish and a gorgeous, light, runny honey character. Some bottle age that adds complexity to the wine. 13.3% alc. $20. 8Sep2005.

Palliser Estate Martinborough Riesling 2002 Rich riesling with ripe fruit flavours but still a dry finish. Hints of musk on the nose, ripe juicy lemon, lime and tropical fruit, lovely zest and a musky pungent character on the finish. 23Sep2002.
Ginger, spice, orange honey, limes, subtle rose. GW-like on the nose but not in the mouth. $21. 2Oct2002.
Aromatic, far more so than the 'Y', with scents of honeysuckle and lots of ripe citrus. Off dry in the palate (7gL/rs), it is full of flavour with the taste of grapefruit marmalade and juicy tropical fruit. Good fruit weight throughout, a bit of talc dries the finish, making you want another yummy mouthful. 12.5% alc. 18Feb2004.

Pegasus Bay Riesling 2002 Pale straw in colour. Grapefruit-like citrus aromas. Juicy, sugary, spritzy and spicy with apricots and fried tropical fruit joining the citrus flavours. A sweetish wine with terrific balance as I would expect from this producer. Serve chilled. 3Dec2002.
The scintillating grapefruit and marmalade aroma carries through to palate to be joined by a myriad of peach, lime and tropical fruit topped with honeysuckle nectar and a smattering of talc. Toasty, sweet and juicy with terrific balance of acidity to fruit this is simply a delicious Riesling with a great length of flavour that goes on and on. One of the best this country produces and so full of flavour after the German wine, showing the deliciously fruity style that New Zealand does so well. 11.5% alc. $22.95. 2Apr2003.
Quite pungent grapefruit peel on the nose and distinctive grapefruit juice and honey flavours in the palate, it's a medium sweet style with a ginger marmalade and wet river stone finish that gives the impression of dryness. This wine is just so impeccably balanced and tastes so delicious, if it didn't have alcohol you'd want to drink it for breakfast. Here's a tip for those people who like grapefruit but can't eat it because they are on one of those grapefruit-free-zone tablets, have Pegasus Bay Riesling as your substitute. 11.5% alc. $22.95. *****. 30Jul2003.
Like freshly squeezed grapefruit juice mixed with a little sugar and served in a sugar frosted glass, this is so incredibly fresh and juicy you could even have it for breakfast! Pegasus Bay 'Aria' Riesling 2002 - Waipara. Lots of honey on the nose - honey, citrus, citrus blossom, honeysuckle and just a hint of botrytis - it smells just delightful. It's sweet -as sweet as some desert wines - with a liquid honey texture, a touch of beeswax, candied orange, a little angelica herb to balance the sugar. The finish is sweet and long. This seems sweeter than Aria has been in the past. But it's beautifully balanced and flows across the palate nicely. 9% alc. 21Aug2003.
Deep straw gold, it smells of honeysuckle and tropical fruits while in the palate it's seems spritzy with its upfront zesty ginger ale and sweet citrus flavours. A wine with lovely balance, the terrifically fresh clean tropical fruit flavours interweave with runny honey and honeyed citrus lingers. The bright acid backbone makes it perfect for a sweet summer quencher. Around 120 grams per litre of residual sugar. 9% alc. 22Oct2003.

Peregrine Central Otago Riesling 2002 Pale straw. Grapefruit peel aromas and some Turkish delight. Off dry, spritzy, light and lemony with a dry zestiness that lingers well. Starts slowly but builds up power. Lots of sweet citrus - oranges, mandarins and sweet grapefruit on the finish. Zesty and lively. Very long. Lovely wine. 22Apr2003.

Riverby Marlborough Riesling 2002 Limes, lots of limes, tickling acidity with an earthy balance. The wine on its own is lemony and yeasty, very full bodied and rich. It's dry refreshing and spritzy. This is the type of Riesling made for fresh white fish with minimal preparation. 28Mar2003.
Pale lemon in colour, floral and talc aromas, youthful for it's age (it is 3 years old when tasted). Crisp, steely, very, very dry, chalky textured with abundant lemon, developing a honeyed toastiness to the finish that rounds it out nicely. Bone dry, some bottle age character coming through. Rockburn Central Otago Riesling 2002 "A distinctively floral nose" say the notes and I wrote "definitely". This is a very crisp and pure riesling with steely acidity, a very strong citrus flavour, good weight and a strong finish. The potential is definitely there but I feel it needs a little time to let the flavours evolve. First harvest from the Lowburn site. 13.5% alc. 8.5 g/l TA, 4.5g/l rs. 4Nov2002.

Saint Clair Marlborough Riesling 2002 Served just slightly chilled, this is a vivaciously fruity riesling with the aromas of all sorts of citrus, from limes through to grapefruit marmalade, as well as a touch of honey and something that reminds me of minerally 'bath salts'. Its crisp and refreshing and just off-dry with the sweetness well-balanced to the acidity. Richer apricot flavours join the citrus, adding to the flavour and length. Shingle Peak Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Pale lemon and showing a little spritz in the glass. Tropical fruit aromas with hints of banana passionfruit, ripe citrus and talc. Strong lime and mandarin flavours fill out the palate. It's spicy and aromatic, a little oily in texture with a warm ripe fruit tropical finish that has a touch of lemon honey. Lingers well. This was good with sashimi sushi (raw fish on sticky rice) spiced with wasabi. 13% alc. 12Apr2003.

Spy Valley Riesling 2002 - Marlborough Light in colour and shy in aroma though plenty of character in the mouth with a well-balanced blend of honey, lemon, apple and ginger, this dryish style has good palate weight and lots of zesty acidity. Long and pure in its flavour, the finish is a little nutty while freshly squeezed lemon juice and lemon grass flavours linger nicely. 12.5% alc. $17.95. 26May2004

Te Kairanga Martinborough Riesling 2002 There's a lovely core of citrus fruit in the pure, clean, fresh, full-flavoured Riesling that has the potential to develop very nicely in the bottle. Fantastic length. Good wine. 13Oct2003.

Torlesse Canterbury Riesling 2002 An off-dry Riesling, apple flavours dominate the palate and citrus zest enlivens the finish. It's a light, care-free, summery wine that will suit chilling to the max. And it will also be terrific with spicy food. 12.5 % alc. $12.95. 20Aug2003.

Trinity Hill Wairarapa Riesling 2002 There's an attractive touch of petillance in this lovely dry riesling. Very delicate flavours quite pure varietal fruit, clean with quite a creamy texture, like creaming soda. Apple notes on the finish. Good. 12% alc. 4 grams r.s. 19Aug2002.

Vidal Estate Marlborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Pale straw. Limes, earthy and a little cheesy. Similar to the Lawson's in its scent but fuller and richer. A ripe, full-bodied riesling with a fizzy sherbet-like backbone. Quite long on the finish which is a little toasty with a spun sugar / toffee nuance. 13%. 22Apr2003.

Villa Maria Cellar Selection Riesling 2002 Lots of pithy citrus, it's got good zesty liveliness with just a touch of honey enhancing the dry lemony flavour. Lovely palate weight just the slightest viscosity gives it a lovely flow across the palate. Jut off dry with excellent persistence. A touch of tropical fruit lingers. Gorgeous wine with just an earthy touch, it finished warm from the 13.5% alcohol. 28Aug2003.

Villa Maria Private Bin Marlborough Riesling 2002 Fresh and zingy citrus flavours backed up with honey, honeysuckle and tropical fruits. Freshly squeezed juicy lemon juice flavours are nicely balanced to the sweetness of the wine and linger on the finish. 23Oct2002.
A pale gold coloured wine with a tropical fruit aroma and a clean fresh fruity flavour. It's fleshy and bright with citrus, stonefruit, melon, pineapple and just a little honey, a lovely start to an evening. 12.5% alc. 3Dec2003.

Villa Maria Cellar Selection Seddon Riesling 2002 Marlborough (sc) Lime, floral and talc-like aromas lead into a dryish wine with some development in the palate but not enough to hide the lovely fruit purity and flavours reminiscent of apples, grapefruit and lemon, lime and ginger marmalade. Off dry with steely acidity and excellent length, it is seemingly delicate but with underlying power. 12.5% alc. $21.95. 17Nov2004.
The delicate floral, talc and citrus zest aromas don't really prepare you for the powerful flavours that are crammed with lime, grapefruit zest and fleshy stonefruit with a touch of honey, a smooth flowing texture, a lovely acidic backbone and a sherbet spritziness coming through on the finish. Vynfields Dry Martinborough Riesling 2002 (sc) Smelling quite floral with limes and talc-like aromatics, this is a crisp, steely Aus look-alike that is already starting to develop some toasty fusel notes. It is dry and crisp but still juicy and has a rich mouthfilling lemony finish. 11.5% alc. 3g/L rs. 8.3g/L TA. $22. 19Oct2004.

Waipara Springs Riesling 2002 Lemon in colour, it's lightly floral on the nose with honeysuckle and citrus. Fresh crisp apples and lemons fill out the flavour, together with a touch of spice and the suggestion of honey and apricot on the rather more-ish finish. It's got crisp acidity, a lovely palate weight and terrific length. Waipara really does produce some terrific Rieslings and it is nice to see one being released with a bit of age. Stephanie likes to hold back her Riesling to allow it to soften and show a little bottle age before release. It works! A wine that, according to my colleagues, goes well with oysters. 12% alc. 8.7 gm rs. 13Oct2003.

Woollaston Nelson Riesling 2002 Pungent aroma with citrus oil, talcum powder, hand cream, orange toffee, sun heated river stones in a shower of rain. Oily at first, a little floral, then becomes quite sweet tending to honey on finish and finishes well. Orange rind flavours linger. 17Oct2002.
Light straw in colour with a lustrous glow, a nicely developed toasty aroma, quite broad, fleshy citrus and melon flavours and a crisp dry, long full citrus and spice finish. Dry River 'Craighall' Riesling 2001 - pale straw in colour with an extremely fragrant nose of delicate citrus blossom, talc and a lime freshness that really zings. Pure and delicate in the mouth as it floats across the tongue and reaches every nook and cranny with its piercing and refreshing lime juice flavour. This is a hauntingly pure riesling with a full-bodied flavour and a hint of yeast-derived nuttiness that's still to dissipate at this early stage of its life. Esk Valley Hawkes Bay Riesling 2001 There's plenty of acid in this crisp, refreshing wine with apples, lemons and honey. Although 19 grams of residual sugar, the crisp acids balance the sweetness very well. Low alcohol at 10%. $20. 5Nov2001.

Felton Road Dry Riesling 2001 (Central Otago) Bright & zesty riesling with plenty of bright acidity well balanced to the almost stone fruit like character with a floral, tropical lift to the finish. Floral citrus scents. Plenty of lively acidity. Lemon biscuits, lime sherbet. Spritzy, sweetish riesling, tho' this is meant to be dry. It finishes dry and chalky with oxidative oily citrus that enrichens in a broad way. The jury is out on this one (from this bottle). $21. 5Jun2002.

Forrest Estate Marlborough Riesling 2001 Powerful toasty lime & lemons. Seems a little drier. Well balanced. Earthy. Lingering apples flavours. Concentrated & flavoursome. Forrest Estate "The Valleys" Wairau Dry Marlborough Riesling 2001 (sc) This library release is the first wine that Forrest Estate bottled under screwcap. Showing more obvious golden hues, the aroma is developed and hinting of marmalade with talc and a delicate floral perfume. There's a full flourish of citrussy zest and spice in the palate - becoming quite voluminous - almost oily - with a steely slatey crispness and always that dry limey character with fruit sweetness balancing it beautifully. 12.5% alc. $22-$25. 1Sep2008.
This is an excellent example of bottle-aged, dry NZ Riesling. It's a deep, lime-tinged gold colour, the slightly fusel aromas have tropical lime and coconut nuances with a marmalade sweetness and the concentrated, almost toasty flavours are spicy and zesty with apricot, citrus and a fullness to the crisp, flinty finish. 12.5% alc. $26.99. 11Mar2009.

Framingham Marlborough Classic Riesling 2001 This wine is so clean, no wonder - it has a screwcap. Zingy limes with honey and flowers and great length on the palate. This label has great heritage for its quality. I'm glad they've gone to screwcaps because cork taint has affected my appreciation for this wine in the past. 18.5/20 16Sep2001
Nutty, apple-seed, lemony, quite lifted and leaner than Wiffen tasted immediately before it. This is listed as medium-dry but seems to me to be on the drier side of medium. Framingham Marlborough Dry Riesling 2001 Apple, subtle lemon and honey scents. Apple in the palate too. Quite hard and very dry. Hints of honey, faintest hints of beeswax. Very long on the finish with characteristic lime emerging. Aftertaste is good and makes me thing of a crisp juicy apple. Definitely one for the cellar. $27. 22May2002.

Fromm Marlborough Riesling 2001 (tank sample) Made in a Spatlese style, this wine is just so lovely. It is very ripe, balances and sweet with honey, limes and peaches. 9% alcohol and 70 grams residual sugar. To be released in November. Tasted 18Sep2001.

Fromm La Strada Auslese Riesling 2001, Marlborough Very pale lemon in colour, a little earthy on the nose it's deliciously sweet in the palate, think of flower nectar with a touch of spice. It has such wonderful purity, think of fresh water mountain streams running over river gravels, and though rich in texture it has the lightness of butterfly tears. The finish is endless. This pale coloured, sweet, low alcohol German style of Riesling is like apple strudel in a glass. It smells Germanic with its earthy citrussy character that some people call 'kero' and it's slightly smoky/flinty in the palate too. There's plenty of pure Riesling character with a fruit juice-like viscosity and a lemon skin oiliness to the finish, once we knew it was New Zealand and not German, it could only from Fromm. 7.5% alc. $46.95. 22Sep2004.

Gibbston Valley Central Otago Riesling 2001 Really, really high acid apparent - limes bring the mouth back to earth immediately after the Gwtz. Actually there is an earthiness to this dry and tangy wine. Now some tropical fruits emerge and it the flavours lingers well. Quite delicate in a way - try it with whitebait. This definitely will last well. The finish is long, long, long. $27.95. 3Jul2002.

Giesen Reserve Canterbury Riesling 2001 Fantastic scents of orange honey, apricot and botrytis. Fantastic toasty sweet fruit. Baked honey apples. Juicy as heck. Very long but just a bit gluggy on the finish that lingers with apple flavours. $24. 22May2002.
An oily wine in looks and smell with beeswax, apricot, honey, a rich weighty palate and terrific length. It's golden yellow and as heavy as any NZ Riesling you are going to buy, very much in the Alsace mould. Blue cheese and dried fruits would go very well indeed and perhaps a chicken and blue Brie pizza. 14% alc. 4Feb2004.

Grove Mill Riesling 2001 Grape and honey suckle flower aroma. Rich, concentrated and voluptuous in the palate with sweet citrus and fleshy ripe stone fruit. Has about 17.5 to 18grams per litre of residual sugar, but beautifully balanced to the acid. A touch of malolactic prior to stop fermenting. A very fine wine with excellent aging potential, destined to become so honeyed, rich and luscious with time. 2 days later the wine had filled out gorgeously. Generous mouthful of perfectly balanced sweet ripe fruit with a citrus nuttiness, hints of apples, honeyed ginger spice and an almost creamy richness. Hunters Marlborough Riesling 2001 Good weighty dry riesling with fruit sweetness. Strong lime and loquat blossoms. Tastes sugary first thing in mouth - like grapefruit with frozen sugar. Kim Crawford Dry Marlborough Riesling 2001 (stelvin) Plenty of upfront sherbert. Yeasty youthfulness then "here comes the citrus". Lashings of limes and lemons. Great balance. Hints of honey. Very clean and pure with a lovely palate richness and great intensity on the length. 11/8/2001

Lake Chalice Marlborough Riesling 2001 Quite a thick textured riesling with honey, lemons, orange peel and flowers. Very lifted, it sits high on the palate. Floral notes emerge on the finish. Toasty notes linger. NZ$18.95. 22Jul2002.

Langdale Canterbury Riesling 2001 Honeysuckle and musky spice aromas. Juicy fruit chewing gum flavours with some jube-like lolly flavours. A bit medicinal - Disprin-like (imagine disprin dissolved in water). 2/3 of the room liked this wine. I rate it just OK on this sample. $15.95. 20Mar2002.

Loopline Vineyard Riesling 2001 (Opaki) Seems so bright and clean after the last few wines. Tangy lemon and lime. Perfumed, talcy riesling. Very good but not excellent. I would give this 4.5 stars. Cuisine gave it 5. $19-$22. Cuisine T10 tasting. 12Jun2002.

Main Divide Canterbury Riesling 2001. Green tinged straw yellow. Citrus aromas strongly reminiscent of grapefruit with honey. Really juicy, juicy sweet citrus with honey, lime and marmalade and then a little rotten citrus, perhaps, appearing on the finish. Light and easy and only 9% alcohol. $17. 2May2002
Amazing value, perfumed, lemon, honey, ginger and spice, musk and a hint of grapefruit sherbet on the finish. It can stand a bit of chilling, perhaps 2 hours before drinking. A refreshing wine that the driver could safely have a glass of. 9Sep2002.

Matua Valley Petrie Riesling 2001 Good acidity and a full-body, slightly oily with a flower nectar influence. Lemons, apples and pears, a hint of light cheese and a dry finish with a hint of honey sweetness. Good aperitif, seafood dish or pair with ham - or just imagine that fruit and cheese platter - a cheese like a brie, perhaps. This is really good drinking and I am definitely enjoying it as a pre-dinner drink. 4Jul2002.

Montana Reserve Marlborough Riesling 2001 Continues the fine tradition of this label. Citrus blossom, honeysuckle and lemon/lime aromas. Quite a lush viscous texture with concentrated lime and honey flavours with a floral overtone. Fairly dry with a long citrus-influenced finish and a touch of zesty spice. Lemons, limes, lime oil, terpenes and hints of honey on the nose of this well developed smelling Marlborough riesling that could be mistaken for an Aussie. There's terrific richness in the spicy zesty palate that has a waxy, oily texture and an abundance of citrus with hints of coconut and tropical juices on the warm dry finish that is just a little hot, even peppery. Terrific acid structure, lovely richness and a seamless flow. A consistently good wine year after year. 13% alc. 1Oct2003.

Murdoch James Riesling 2001 Attractive floral aromas and sweet apple and peach flavours with plenty of apple blossom and floral characters. There's a nice touch of underlying citrus with a touch of spritz on the finish. It's a fruity style with a flavour reminiscent of juicy fruit chewing gum (when the flavours of the fruity gum are fresh in the mouth). 13% alc. 3.6grams of residual sugar. Nga Waka Martinborough Riesling 2001 Coming along nicely since last tasting. Apples, citrus, hints of spice. Still very tight but given the track record, will develop well. Well balanced and although 0 grams rs it is not so acidic that it wants to strip the enamel off the teeth. Evidently has been left on the vine so the pH is low. Delicate citrus, apple and talc mineral scents, there's lemon pith and lime in this bone dry wine. Ripe fruit and 13% alcohol contribute to the impression of sweetness on the palate of this earthy wine that is developing some oily traits. Lime and honeysuckle linger on the finish. Old Vines Marlborough Riesling 2001 Rich riesling with plenty of honey and grapefruit. Sweetish, but good style for the cafe. $16.95 9Dec2001

Palliser Estate Martinborough Riesling 2001 Delicate aromas, floral with hints of mango. Very zesty, spritzy, sherbet flavours in palate. Bright and livel with all facets of citrus. Excellent balance. Very long and lifted honey & citrus lingers. Juicy with passionfruit emerging on the long after-flavour. Excellent wine. $18-$22. Cuisine T10 tasting. 12Jun2002.

Pegasus Bay Riesling 2001 Light straw-lemon colour. Appealing scents of lime flowers and lime skin zest. Delicately gentle in the palate with bright zesty lime, sherbet and honey flavours that increase in intensity after the wine is swallowed, when white peach emerges as well. There's just a hint of botrytis apparent and a spritzy character from the spicy acidity. This is just the most gobsmackingly gorgeous New Zealand riesling in the style of a Spatlese from the Moselle - I was proud to share it with my wine lover friends on the occasion of Bob and Janet's visit from the US. 8Feb2002.
Spicy, ginger, sweet citrus, lychees, very gw-like today. Sweet but v. balanced to the acid. Lovely and lifted on the finish. This is a wine to have instead of dessert. 9% alcohol. 12Jul2002.

Pegasus Bay Aria Riesling 2001 Late picked in June 2001. 50%.was botrytised. The rest was shrivelled up and free of bot. There's a delicate green hue to the colour. Fabulously delicious. Lots of terrific citrus flavours of lime, grapefruit and juicy orange. Lots of honeysuckle, nectar and liquid honey too. Ripe, pure, clean, low alcohol and a delight to drink. 8.5%, 12gms. 9Sep2002.
Citrus and honey, flowers and beeswax, it smells absolutely sweet like nectar, it's laden with fruit and the acidity is beautifully integrated. Ginger, apricot and grapefruit peel linger. 25Sep2003.

Peregrine Riesling 2001 (Central Otago) Slightly floral on the nose. Spicy characters, yeasty, pears, bubble gum (this is a character I often get in CO wines). Second taste has lots of juicy orange developing and a hint of honey. Plenty of acidity. Quite chewy in a way. Drying finish. Seems quite weighty in the alcohol dept. A 'fatter' style rieslihg with a lemony finish. $20-$21. Cuisine T10 tasting. 12Jun2002.
Central Otago. The first whiff of the hot lemon and slightly rubbery aroma at first made me think this was a Clare Valley Riesling. However the concentrated 'Roses Lime Juice' aroma quickly takes over and dominates both the nose and palate. It's a fairly dry, spicy wine with good palate weight and lots of juicy lime and lemon citrus flavours. This dry acidic style of Riesling is one that people either love or hate. Me, I just love this style, as did the Cuisine Top 10 Riesling judges last year. $21.95. 22Jan2003.

Rippon Riesling 2001 Very dry steely riesling with a hint of limey citrus on the nose. Fills out well to have a fairly intense finish with an earthy richness. 23Sep2002.

Saint Clair Marlborough Riesling 2001 Rich, honeyed, nectar-like. Juicy, with plenty of lime and citrus. Long, rich and powerful with excellent underlying structure and a powerful flavoursome finish. $13.95 18.5/20. Tasted 5Sep2001.
Honey, lemon and apples seed aromas. Honey, lemon, lime and apples flavours with a touch of ginger. A juicy, juicy wine in a medium style with the citrus lingering for ages. 9May2002

Seresin Marlborough Riesling 2001 Lemon perfume with Radox mineral salts. Very dry teeth enamel-stripping acidity. Lemons, limes, chalky textured wine with a honeysuckle finish. Very young and austere at this stage. Needs to be hidden in the cellar to develop toasty marmalade characters. $23. 30Oct2002.

Pale straw in colour with racy lime aromas and a monetary whiff of rubber band this wine is stylistically different to typical Marlborough Riesling. It's dry to the bone, spicy and refreshing with excellent citrus acidity that will cut through the greasiest fish and chips. $22.95. 29Jan2003.

Stoneleigh Marlborough Riesling 2001 Vibrant lemon and lime aromas and flavours. Juicy and full-flavoured in the mouth. Lots of acid but balanced. Long finish with floral notes. $19. 15Jun2002.
Dryish and a little tart at first but lovely sweet honeyed fruit and rich complexity builds up in the mouth. Will age well. 27Aug2002.
Lemon gold, slightly oily in appearance. Orange blossom/hedge flower fragrance. Dry to the palate, limey, spicy, lime zest, tons of acidity with a steely, earthy backbone, talc, and green apple. It's got terrific length and is starting to develop a touch of kero and toasty secondary characters. 30Mar2004.

Stratford Riesling 2001 Reminds me of a Clare Valley riesling on the nose. Limey, rich, earthy, weighty riesling, nicely textured, hints of green melon with citrus lingering. 12% alc. 4gms rs. 16Oct2002.

Te Kairanga Martinborough Riesling 2001 Honeyed and rich yet zingy and powerful. A lovely flavoursome wine and long in the palate. 18/20. 16Sep2001

Vavasour A.V. Riesling 2001 Wild ferments give a wild lemony / limey scent and full, rich, leesy, citrussy flavours. There's a nice development to this mouthfilling wine that has a touch of honey and hay on the finish. 24Jul2003.

Vidal Estate Marlborough Riesling 2001 Great aromatics with citrus, flowers and hints of honey. Refreshing dry style with limes and apples and a zesty fulfilling ripe fruit finish that lingers well with a spicy lift. 12.5%. 21Jan2002.

Villa Maria Private Bin Riesling 2001 Bright and zesty with refreshing lemon and grapefruit. It's a dry style with plenty of acid, which makes this wine an excellent cellaring proposition for up to six years. The acids will soften and the wine will transform in the bottle to become honeyed and toasty. $14-$16. Oct2001.

Villa Maria Cellar Selection Riesling 2001 Aromas of baked spiced apples but in the palate the apple flavours are fresh and crisp. Dry and a little chalky at first from the intense upfront acids, then juicy ripe lemon and lime layered with honey, emerges. Dry lingering finish with a hint of stonefruit and a touch of zesty spice, then those apples appear again to linger on the finish. This wine is great drinking I recommend it be served slightly chilled but if you are patient, cellaring will reward immensely. It has the acidity and structure to make it last. Oct 2001.
Floral, herb and lime aromas. Really juicy in the palate at first but the finish is hard, like slightly underripe apples. However, the apples linger for an age. A wine to put away in the cellar for at least 3-4 years. $21.95. 20Mar2002.

Voss Estate Riesling 2001 Citrus with a hint of honey. Excellent varietal characters. Dry in the palate with some peach and fleshy characters emerging. 11.5% alcohol. 4.8 grams residual sugar. $17. 18Sep2001.

Vynfields Ultra Dry Martinborough Riesling 2001 Very dry and steely with an overriding apple character but a weighty texture and a crisp lengthy finish. Very dry and very pure. 13Oct2003.

Waimea Estate Classic Neslon Riesling 2001 Developed limey aromas. Quite intense in the palate almost to the state of being overpowering. Good wine. Plenty of flavours. Limes, apples, spice and musky talc. Great finish with apples possibly the most dominating lingering characteristic. $16.95. 20Mar2002.

Waipara Springs Riesling 2001 Straw gold. Older developed aromas tending to marmalade. Sherbet-iike with plenty of zest, limes, grapefruit earth and fennel-like herbs. Good palate weight, length and follow-on. Lots of flavour. A very drinkable style. 4/5. 10Oct2002.

West Brook Marlborough Riesling 2001 Honey aromas, apple, citrus, zesty and vibrant and balanced sweetness with a good acid lift. 18/20 28Aug2001.

Whitehaven Marlborough Riesling 2001 Really good palate weight. Lots of rich ripe limey flavours, quite honeyed. Will age well. 27Aug2002.
Lemon and honey characterise this juicy riesling. There's lots of acidity and the finish is juicy and clean. Slowing good development. $19. 11Sep2001.
